How Alcohol Affects Diabetes
Posted: Sep 28, 2011 |Comments: 0 |
Diabetes is a complicated medical condition that requires the patient to pay strict attention to their diet. It takes a huge committment for the patient, meaning that they must pay attention to the foods they eat, take medications and test their blood sugars regularly. Just by taking these simple steps it is possible to improve your blood sugar levels. Most patients are good about watching their diet but tend to forget that certain things, like alcohol intake, can cause a huge spike in blood sugars and can undo all of their hard work!
Alcohol is a beverage that is rich in calories and low in nutrition. It actually provides practically no nutritional value. Alcoholic beverages are broken down into simple sugars and glucose within the body, increasing blood sugar levels. Unfortunately, even a small amount of alcohol can raise blood sugar dramatically. Although patients with diabetes do not have to cut alcohol out completely, they should take care not to overindulge and remember that alcohol can have other effects on blood sugar.
Too much alcohol can cause low blood sugars, driving them to a dangerously low level. AIt is a good idea to have a glucometer such as the Bayer Contour glucose meter on hand to check sugars in case you start to feel weak, shaky or lightheaded. These are symptoms of hypoglycemia.
As previously discussed, alcohol can also cause high blood sugars that can exacerbate chronic complications of diabetes such as diabetic retinopathy, foot problems and kidney disease. It is important to monitor sugars carefully if you do drink. Ask your doctor for a free glucometer to help you track your blood sugars.
Alcohol can affect diabetes in several other ways. Drinking alcoholic beverages can also raise triglycerides, which can build up and cause fatty liver disease. In addition, alcohol can increase blood pressure readings and can interact with many medications.Drinking may also trigger the appetite and cause patients to overeat or to snack frequently.
Patients who drink too much alcohol increase the risk of complications from diabetes and raising overall sugar levels and the a1c blood test. High triglycerides contribute to heart disease and liver problems. In addition, when these levels are extremely high it can trigger acute pancreatitis, a dangerous condition that is life threatening.
If you have diabetes, talk with your doctor to see if it is okay for you to have an occasional glass of alcohol. If you are allowed to drink alcohol, remember not to overindulge because excessive amounts can cause significant diabetic complications.

A Diabetes Diet Plan
Posted: Sep 30, 2011 |Comments: 0 |
Diabetes is on the rise everywhere. As our lifestyle becomes less and less healthy, more of us suffer from this condition. This doesn’t have to be the case. Since our lifestyle is the main cause of diabetes, we can fix the root of the problem by changing our lifestyle. In many cases, type 2 diabetes can even be reversed in a relatively short period of time.
IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: This article is for reference purposes only. It is not intended to be a substitute for medical treatment that may have been prescribed by your doctor. If you suspect you have a medical condition, seek qualified medical help.
The standard medical practices for treating diabetes do not address the root of the condition. Prescribed medication can keep your blood sugar levels under control, but if you keep eating a diet that’s causing diabetes, the medication only acts as a quick fix. It fails to address the real problem. If you change the foods you eat, you can remove the root cause of type 2 diabetes. Often it can be reversed completely. Does this sound too good to be true? It isn’t. There are wellness programs that consistently have solid results in helping type 2 diabetes patients discontinue their medications.
What’s the secret to reversing type 2 diabetes? It’s actually quite simple: a minimally processed, whole foods, plant-based diet. You can go into great detail on the subtle points of this diet, but the overall concept isn’t complex.
The phrase “minimally processed” means that you eat food that has had the least amount of processing. A good example of this is fresh fruits and vegetables. If you go pick a fruit from the tree, this is coming straight from nature, with no artificial flavors, additives or alterations. Once you take this piece of fruit, then add artificial substances and process it, then you’ve robbed it of most of its nutritional value. You’ve also added toxins that will do damage to your body. Food this is originally healthy and natural becomes harmful once it has been heavily processed.
The phrase “whole foods” means that you eat natural foods in their natural state. This concept is similar to that of minimally processed foods. A fresh, raw apple is better than an apple flavored snack that has a laundry list of strange artificial substances added to it. If you look at the ingredients on the box of a snack and see lots of complicated words with lots of syllables, it’s better to put it back on the shelf and leave it there. Whole foods provide your body with optimal nutrition and leave out the harmful toxins.
The phrase “plant-based” means that you eat a diet that does not have animal products. This means no meat, no chicken, no fish, no pork, no cheese, no milk, basically nothing that comes from any animal source. This is a very important point that shouldn’t be overlooked. Studies show that animal proteins, along with the many other harmful substances found in animal products, contribute significantly to the underlying causes of type 2 diabetes.
The idea of giving up meat seems crazy for many people. If you feel this way about giving up animal products, ask yourself if it’s worth it. If you have type 2 diabetes, do you think it might be worth trying out a plant based diet if it could eliminate your diabetes forever? Which is better to live without, animal products or diabetes? Give it a try for 4 weeks and see what happens. Many people who have type 2 diabetes get off their medication in less time than that. If you’re willing to give it a try, here are some guidelines to help you out.
The following foods should be avoided:
All forms of meat: pork, beef, chicken, turkey, and fish
Soft drinks, store bought fruit juice, coffee, alcohol, etc.
Fried, baked, grilled, boiled, roasted, and microwaved foods
Cooked grains (including rice, pasta, bread and corn)
Oatmeal, grits, and processed cereals
Food with wheat and/or wheat gluten
Foods you should eat:
Raw vegetables (preferably organic)
Raw fruits (preferably organic)
Fresh sprouts
Blue-green algae supplements (such as E3 Live)
At first glance, this diet probably seems very restrictive. However, if you search around the web for plant-based, raw food recipes you will soon discover that there are a myriad dishes, appetizers, snacks and desserts you can make with these ingredients. If you have a good attitude and determination, you can work a minimally processed, whole foods, plant-based diet into your life. Try it for four weeks and see the amazing changes that come about in your body as a result. There are many people out there who are making this transition to truly healthy eating. Why not be one of them?

Diabetes - What’s it all about?
Posted: Sep 27, 2011 |Comments: 0 |
The medical profession states that “Diabetes is a chronic illness”, which creates a change in the body by reducing or removing the body’s capability to break down the glucose that is consumed within the food we eat. Glucose is used by the body as its source of power.
About Insulin.
The body produces Insulin, in the Pancreas. Insulin is a hormone used to centrally regulate the metabolism of fat and carbohydrates in the body. Insulin causes the cells in the Liver, Muscles and Fat tissue to soak up Glucose from the blood, or absorb it, storing it as “Glycogen”. Insulin is produced to remove excess glucose from the blood, which would otherwise become toxic. The Liver also regulates its secretion of Glucose in the presence of Insulin. When blood glucose levels fall below a certain level the stored sugar (in muscles and fat tissue) is used. This process of extracting the stored sugar is called “Glycogenolysis”. This means that for the body energy system to function properly, the creation of Insulin has to be in balance with the need to control Blood Glucose i.e. Glucose in the blood, as opposed to stored as Glycogen in the Liver, Muscles or Fat tissue.
About Diabetes.
Diabetes comes about when the body either cannot produce enough Insulin (Type 1) or the body develops a resistance to Insulin (Type 2) and subsequently the Insulin is unable to do its work in controlling the glucose levels in the blood or releasing store Glycogen for use as energy.
A quick side-bar:
HypErglycemia is the condition when there is a higher than normally concentration of blood sugar.
HypOglycemia is the condition when there is a lower than normal concentration of blood sugar.
The condition escalates when the buildup of glucose stays inside the person’s blood stream for an extended time frame. For the duration of this time, this quantity of glucose may eventually cause damage to other organs just like the eyes, renal system, heart, and nerves. In Diabetes Type 2, some specialists say that it’s an auto-immune disease that makes the body’s defense mechanism, which operates as a shield against infection, fail. Thus, destroying cells situated within the pancreas which is where the body creates blood insulin. Blood insulin is essential in managing the absorption of glucose from the blood which comes from the food we eat and digested.
For those who are afflicted by Type 1, their body lacks the capability to create blood insulin, subsequently, the body can sustain damaged through the accumulated glucose in the blood. The body needs blood insulin to handle the conversion of food to energy, those that are suffering with this variety of diabetes need to get blood insulin on a 24/7 basis. Children and teenagers are vulnerable to this type of diabetes but this can happen at all ages or may be a consequence of an illness. Type 1 Diabetes sufferers typically exhibit symptoms of increased thirst and hunger, regularly peeing, and drastic weight-loss.
Diabetes Type 2, is usually known as “non-blood insulin-dependent diabetes” or “adult-onset diabetes”. What sets Type 2 apart from Type 1 diabetes is the fact that the individual being affected by this can be creating blood insulin. Either the amount produced is in not enough to make use of it successfully or the body has become resistant to the amount of insulin and it is less effective at lowering blood sugar.
Insulin resistance in fat and muscle cells reduces the glucose absorption and local storage of Glycogen. Insulin resistance in the Liver cells reduces the synthesis or manufacturing of Glycogen and a failure to control Glucose production - resulting in higher levels of Glucose entering the blood. This sort is acknowledged as the most common kind of diabetes, which often is found amongst those that are 40 years old or far more.
Individuals who are at most risk from this kind of diabetes are frequently individuals who are overweight or obese and men and women that have an inactive lifestyle. Being a progressive condition, Diabetes Type 2 may also result in a additional complications like illnesses including heart or kidney problems, or eye issues which could lead to serious consequences.
The final type is named “Gestational Diabetes” which develops all through pregnancy. Usually, this type of diabetes finishes following childbirth nonetheless; there are reported cases in a handful of women that develop this type diabetes as time passes. Gestational diabetes, even though it really is common amongst women that are pregnant, needs to be checked as there is a sizable risk of resulting in Diabetes Type 2.

Prevention of Circulatory Problems
Posted: Sep 21, 2011 |Comments: 0 |
Circulatory problems, especially heart disease, are the major cause of premature death in people with diabetes, and prevention of these problems is a central goal in the treatment of diabetes. You can take a number of steps to reduce your risk of heart disease and circulatory problems:
Improve glucose control. The target levels are described.
Lower blood pressure. I have already discussed in the “Diabetic Kidney Disease” section earlier in this chapter the importance of controlling blood pressure. The treatment goal is to get the systolic blood pressure (top number) below 130 mm Hg and the diastolic blood pressure (bottom number) below 80.
Take aspirin. Clinical studies show that aspirin reduces the risk of heart attacks and stroke. Aspirin works by making platelets (the cells in the blood that are responsible for blood clotting) less sticky. Recent studies indicate that lower doses are just as effective as higher doses, so low-dose aspirin therapy (a 75-81 mg dose once a day) is recommended if you already have heart disease or circulatory problems. If you cannot tolerate aspirin because of allergic reaction or another reason, your doctor may prescribe a medicine called clopidogrel (Plavix), which also makes the platelets less sticky. Individuals with type 1 and 2 diabetes without heart disease or circulatory problems should also take low-dose aspirin therapy if they have a strong family history of heart disease; if they have kidney damage, high blood pressure, or lipid problems; if they are smokers; or if they are older than forty years.
Stop smoking. Smoking increases the risk of both macrovascular and microvascular damage in people with diabetes.
Improve your lipid profile. People with type 2 diabetes frequently have abnormalities of their lipid profile-a collective term for cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol levels. Almost all people with type 2 diabetes and many with type 1 diabetes need to take medicines for the lipid abnormalities.
In people with diabetes, the levels of triglycerides are frequently too high and the levels of HDL are too low. In addition, people with diabetes tend to have a form of LDL particles called small, dense LDL, which can abnormally collect in the blood vessel walls and cause atherosclerosis. Research has shown that correcting these lipid abnormalities in people with diabetes reduces the development of atherosclerosis. The goals of treatment are to
Lower the LDL cholesterol to at least below 100 mg/dl but ideally to 60 to 70 mg/dl
Lower the triglyceride level to below 150 mg/dl
Raise the HDL cholesterol to more than 40 mg/dl in men, and to more than 50 mg/dl in women

Places in the southeast, generally termed America’s “stroke belt,” now have an additional questionable honor as the USA’s “diabetes belt.” Research workers out of the Centers for Disease Control located in Atlanta, made use of nation-wide statistics to point out places where individuals actually have an increased chance of establishing diabetes.
Around twenty-six million people young and old inside the United States of America experience all forms of diabetes, and on top of that treatment expenses are more than one hundred billion dollars per year. On top of that, those with diabetic issues usually are very likely to get various other health problems, for instance kidney problems, heart disease and some varieties of cancer.
What they came across was a noticeable pattern of substantial rates of diabetes in portions of 15 states, which are: Louisiana, North Carolina, West Virginia, Alabama, Texas, Georgia, Florida, Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Ohio and all sections of Mississippi.
About twelve percent of the people residing in the actual diabetes belt had this health problem, compared to 8 1/2 percent over the remainder of the U.S., as per these studies.
According to their own analysis, the CDC noticed that the people located in the diabetes belt ended up being more vulnerable to being overweight and also maintaining an inactive way of life as compared with people throughout the other parts of the U.S. These factors themselves explain around thirty-three percent of the disparity of the instances of diabetes inside the belt and not in the belt.
These regions at the same time include more people greater than 65 years old, and also a bigger amount of African-Americans that happen to be acknowledged as having a greater possibility of establishing diabetes.
On the flip side, even young people that have a trim stomach tend to be more apt to acquire diabetes being inside of the belt in comparison to folks not located in it.
It is suspected that there could be ethnical components that is hard to appraise, like their eating routines or mentality in the case of obtaining medical related assistance, that might impact on an individual’s prospect of developing diabetes.
The diabetes belt definitely overlaps, though not fully, with the so-called stroke belt and also the heart failure belt. Experts with the CDC proposed that policy makers would be wise to direct their attention on combating diabetes in the locations that have the biggest need by forming a healthier lifestyle along with anti-obesity campaigns.
The info in the analysis in all likelihood underestimates the true instances of diabetes, simply because a segment of all those surveyed perhaps already had diabetes without knowing it.
It was furthermore pointed out that because diabetes is known as a “silent killer”, it’s essential that every person understands this is usually a dangerous problem. Given that we now realize just where the diabetes belt is, it might help generate the message that diabetes is actually a severe affliction and that someone’s probability of developing it may very well be lowered by sticking to a healthy diet in addition to getting more energetic. Gestational Diabetes Meal Plan
Posted: Sep 12, 2011 |Comments: 0 |
Gestational diabetes is a special kind of diabetes developed by 2-5% of moms-to-be. Unless the blood glucose level is extremely high, doctors generally would not advise the use of medication. With a proper gestational diabetes diet plan and exercise routine, your blood sugar level can be controlled. And most pregnant women’s blood glucose level will return to normal after birth.
This article will cover some guidelines to help you build a healthy, balanced diet for gestational diabetes.
Basics Of A Gestational Diabetes Diet
A balanced diet is important for women with gestational diabetes. With the advice of your physician or dietician, you can first determine the total calorie requirement for your daily diet, based on your age, body weight, height, activity levels, and the phase of your pregnancy.
Then you should know how to get the right balance between carbohydrates, protein, and fat in your diet.
As a general rule, you should choose foods that are high in fiber such as whole-wheat bread, cereals, legumes, vegetables and fruits. These foods contain “healthy” carbohydrates as they are digested and absorbed more slowly by your body. This can help control you blood sugar after a meal. These foods should form the foundation of what you eat daily.
What To Eat For Gestational Diabetes
Whole-wheat breads, rice, pasta are good choices of carbohydrates as these are the healthy carbs which are beneficial for maintaining a stable blood glucose level. They contain high fiber levels and are also good for your digestive system.
Vegetables including all leafy greens and yellow vegetables are rich in dietary fiber. For example, broccoli, spinach, cabbage, lettuce, cauliflowers and bell peppers are all good choices as they are also filled with vitamins and minerals.
Fish is a good choice of protein as they contain more healthy unsaturated fatty acids such as omega-3 that are beneficial for you and your baby’s development.
Vegetable oils are also good sources of unsaturated fats that are essential for your health. Olive oil (cold pressed, extra virgin), grape-seed oil, oils from raw nuts are all good choices.
For fruits, try to choose those with a relatively low sugar level, such as green apples, pears, peaches, berries, grapefruits, oranges and so on. Fruits such as watermelons and banana contain relatively higher sugar levels and therefore should be taken in limited amount. Fruits are best eaten with a meal for 1 to 2 servings a day. If your blood glucose is unstable, you may want to eat cucumber, tomatoes instead of fruits.
What Foods To Avoid (Or Eat Less Of)
In general, you should avoid or restrict your intake of foods containing simple sugars such as soft drinks, fruit juice, fruit tea, chocolates, and most desserts. These foods are quickly broken down into glucose, enter your blood stream, and then raise your blood sugar levels.
If you are really craving for sweet foods, consult your doctor to see if you can eat foods containing artificial sweeteners.
You should also limit your intake of unsaturated fats. Choose lean meat instead of fatty ones. Trim off any visible fats before cooking.
Milk contains high levels of lactose, a simple sugar, so if you should control your consumption of milk to 1 to 2 glasses daily. As an alternative, you can reduce your sugar intake by drinking milk formulated for diabetes.
Diet For Gestational Diabetes
Although you want to control your blood sugar levels, this does not mean you should compromise your nutrient needs. You should be eating a diet that provides enough calories and nutrients for you and your baby. At the same time you need to achieve a healthy weight gain during pregnancy.
The nutritional needs of pregnant women with gestational diabetes and women with normal blood sugar are the same. However, you must pay more attention to the caloric intake, the ratio of nutrients (food groups), and meal times.
The following is a ratio and guideline widely recommended by dieticians and is a helpful guide for your to build your own diet:
Intake of carbohydrate-based calories should account for 50-60% of your daily calories
Intake of protein should account for 15-20%
Intake of fat should account for 25-30%
Eat small meals, or 5 to 6 meals a day (note: the purpose of breaking down your meals is to help keep your blood sugar stable)
Your breakfast should make up for 10-15% of your total daily calories requirement
Your lunch and dinner should each account for 30%
Your snacks throughout the day should each account for 5-10%
